This brings us to the second issue of concern in the demonization of fangirls — the systematic belittling of women’s, particularly young women’s, opinions. Fangirls are not only being told they are doing it wrong, they are also being mocked and marginalized within the larger fandom community. Granted, there are some more welcoming, female-friendly environments, such as Tumblr, but in the larger context, fangirls are being told that their opinions and fannish expressions don’t count — or worse, are hysterical and overwrought.
